Britain has accused Russia of trying to kill former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter with a deadly nerve agent – but the Kremlin is fighting back. The UK blamed Russia partly on the grounds that Novichok, the poison used in the attack, was developed in the former Soviet Union. Allies including the US, France, and Germany have agreed that this is the only plausible explanation. Regardless, the Kremlin has denied all involvement. Instead Russian officials and state media outlets have promoted numerous alternative theories which they claim could lead to the real culprits. Scroll down to read what they are. 1. LONDON: Britain and its allies on Thursday (Friday in Manila) blamed Moscow directly for a poison attack on a double agent in England, escalating diplomatic tensions as Washington separately announced sanctions against Russia for allegedly meddling in its elections. The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and the United States said there was “no plausible alternative explanation” for the use of the Soviet-designed nerve agent Novichok in the English city of Salisbury. In a joint statement, they demanded Moscow “address all questions” related to the attack against former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, which they said amounted to a “breach of international law.” Skripal moved to Britain in a 2010 spy swap and had taken his daughter Yulia, who was on a visit, out for lunch before they both collapsed on a bench in the street on March 4. Intelligence agencies now believe the nerve agent used on the pair was planted in the daughter’s suitcase before … [Read more...] about UK, allies hit Moscow for spy attack, vote meddling
DEFENSE Secretary Delfin Lorenzana’s visit to Pagasa Island in the municipality of Kalayaan in the Spratlys last week posed no threat to China of any kind. No troops were landed, neither was any offensive military structure introduced into the island, which lies 450 nautical miles from Manila and 235 miles from Palawan. Nor did the visit modify President Rodrigo Duterte’s declared policy not to assert his government’s rights vis-a-vis China on the disputed maritime areas which, according to the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling at The Hague last July, rightfully belong to the Philippines. In 1975, the Marcos government built an 1,800-meter runway on Pagasa. In 1978, Marcos constituted the Kalayaan Island Group as a separate and distinct municipality of Kalayaan, to be administered directly by the Secretary of National Defense. In May 1988, 147 Filipino voters on Pagasa, having constituted themselves into a barangay, elected Alawin, a Muslim Filpino, as their first … [Read more...] about Why is China so pissed by SND’s Spratly visit?

A hidden and fantastic universe exists just beyond our sight. Luckily, photos taken through the lens of a microscope help scientists document new lifeforms and unknown structures. The images can also reveal an unreal level of detail in everyday objects, like this shimmering blob of dried-up espresso coffee: Each year, a panel of Nikon Small World judges awards cash prizes to microscope photographers for their best work. The above shot is just one of their winning picks for 2016 – and the picture faced some steep competition. “Scientists, photographers and hobbyists from 70 countries submitted more than 2,000 entries,” according to a Nikon press release. “Judges selected winners that exemplified artistic quality as well as exceptional scientific technique.” (I was a judge for the 40th year of the contest, and the selection process, while a privilege, was neither quick nor easy.) Although Business Insider previously showed off the … [Read more...] about These 20 images just won the world’s most prestigious microscope photo contest
The story of John McAfee going from an antivirus-software mogul to a man fleeing Belize on questions about a murder has been chronicled numerous times, but exactly why he had to leave paradise in 2012 is still shrouded in mystery. Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Nanette Burstein (“On the Ropes,” “The Kid Stays in the Picture”) went down to Central America to find the truth in her new movie, but as with many things related to McAfee, it’s layered with more questions than answers. “Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee,” which recently had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and will air on Showtime on Saturday, is a revealing look at McAfee’s time in Belize from the locals who were there alongside him and some who claim they committed violent acts on McAfee’s orders – including murder. In 2012, a neighbor of McAfee’s in Belize, Gregory Faull, was murdered. Sought for … [Read more...] about A new documentary investigates murder allegations against John McAfee and finds chilling answers
