There’s never been a better time to evaluate your smartphone options if you’ve always been an iPhone user. Business Insider/Sujin Thomas If you’ve always only ever used an iPhone, there’s no better time to start evaluating your options than now. With so many world-firsts laid out by Android smartphones arriving way before the iPhone – from bezel-free designs, OLED displays and augmented reality – many of these features have even undergone upgrades that the iPhone struggles to play catch-up with. I finally decided to see what the hype was all about and took the plunge by ditching my trusty iPhone 7 Plus for a new Samsung Galaxy S9+ in a two-week trial, and what I’ve learnt has been somewhat surprising. The S9 and S9+ might not look very different from its predecessor, the S8, and many reviewers have even said that current S8 users may not even see a need for an upgrade. One big focus of the new S series phones are its camera updates and while … [Read more...] about I ditched my iPhone to finally try my first Android, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ – here’s what it was like

By Associated Press If anything, the numbers Apple released Tuesday highlight the company’s growing dependence on the iPhone, whose sales tower above Apple’s other current offerings. The company hasn’t managed to come up with another breakthrough product since its chief visionary, Steve Jobs, died in 2011. Meanwhile, Apple’s rivals have been rolling out new products in other promising fields such as augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Apple currently trails in those areas, although many analysts believe the company may try to catch up with products featuring those trendy technologies later this year. No matter what’s coming down the pike, the iPhone remains a huge moneymaker. Its success is the main reason Apple boasts a market value of $640 billion — more than any other company. The iPhone is also driving the rapid growth of Apple’s services division, which makes money from fixing devices, selling music streaming … [Read more...] about Apple reversed its iPhone slump. SAN FRANCISCO: Apple’s highly anticipated event on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) looks to extend the reach of the iPhone to new markets, as the tech giant moves to regain momentum in the smartphone segment. Analysts believe an invitation-only special event at Apple’s headquarters in Silicon Valley will spotlight a more economical iPhone priced to compete in places where money is tight, along with a beefed-up top-end model. Forrester analyst Charles Golvin told Agence France-Presse that the consensus is for Apple to unveil a new high-end phone, “most likely called the 5S, with the same look and feel physically but with a speed boost; new processor, and new graphics capabilities.” A lower-cost iPhone, has been dubbed the 5C ‘because it would come in multiple colors analogous to today’s iPod touch,” Golvin said. Speculation about the iPhone 5S included the debut of a gold color and fingerprint recognition for enhanced security. Analysts were … [Read more...] about Apple seeks to extend iPhone market reach

APPLE just unveiled its iPhone 7 but it seems most people are not that interested anymore. After awhile, new features cease to amaze. This is not so strange. It happened to personal computers, notebooks, operating systems, cameras, and now, it is hitting Apple. I guess you have to make sure that new features are backward compatible. There is only so much you can change so that it is familiar to those who have used it, but enough new features so that it will be worth a buy. That gets more difficult as time goes on. When the computers had one megabyte of memory, it made a big difference when you were now able to do two or four megabytes. But when you already have four gigabytes, announcing six or eight gigabytes just doesn’t make that much of a difference. When the cameras could take two megapixels, it was a big deal when it doubled, or when the phone had only four gigabytes, it was a big deal when you could make it eight. But now, if you have a phone with 64 gigabytes of … [Read more...] about Ng: The new iPhone
WATCH: The video that shows how iOS 7 was (or could have been) created in Microsoft Word! PS: Be sure to stick through to the end of the video, where Krejci does perhaps his most astonishing work with Word—recreating the angled, reflective image of an iPhone used in Apple ads. So...did Jony Ive design iOS 7 in Microsoft Word to win a bet or something? Of course not, but he could have. Every single one of the new iOS 7 icons — including the more intricate ones like Game Center, Maps, and Stocks — can be recreated almost perfectly in Word as Vaclav Krejci demonstrates the whole process in the video above. We've no idea how long this video took to make, but it’s ten minutes long — and that’s after it has been sped up quite significantly. It’s likely to take the average Joe a lot longer, too, because we're assuming most people’s Word skills aren’t quite as spectacular as Krejci’s. This video serves as a good example of the skill … [Read more...] about [VIDEO] Did This Guy Just Recreate iOS 7 With Microsoft Word?

Analysts from Barclays speculated in a note published on Thursday that one way Apple could convince customers to buy its upcoming $1,000 (£776) phone is through bundling the device with its Apple Music streaming service and increased iCloud storage space. The Barclays analysts suggested that including a free year of Apple Music and 200GB of iCloud storage could make Apple $9.8 billion (£7.6 billion) in extra iPhone revenue in 2018. The upcoming redesigned iPhone will likely sell for at least $1,000. That’s a substantial increase from previous iPhones. Right now, most people buy iPhones that sell for around $700 (£543), as shown in a chart published by CLSA in July: So Apple may need to include a sweetener with the iPhone 8 to convince people to pay the extra $300 (£233). Sure, the new phone will reportedly have a new design, larger screen, and facial recognition. But that price bump could be a stumbling block for a large number … [Read more...] about Analysts say Apple could convince people to buy the $1,000 iPhone by giving them free Apple Music
Despite fears around supply shortages, you can still get the new iPhone X in about 5-6 weeks. iPhone X demand may have been tempered by the bevy of available iPhone options, especially the new iPhone 8. For prospective buyers, it’s difficult to value the price difference between the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, since both phones are so similar under the hood and most people have yet to try the iPhone X. For months, analysts studying Apple and its supply chain have been saying “good luck finding the iPhone X” when it launches in November. Yet, despite demand for the phone being “off the charts” according to Apple CEO Tim Cook, you can still order an iPhone X right now and get it before the end of 2017. As of October 31 – four days after pre-orders kicked off – you can expect to receive most iPhone X models in about 5-6 weeks. We may never know how well the iPhone X is selling is compared to other iPhone … [Read more...] about Why the iPhone 8 makes the iPhone X a tougher sell
